Another important consideration is that dry ice blasting creates no secondary waste. Because the dry ice evaporates on impact, the only material that needs to be cleaned up is the material removed and not the media itself. With other forms of media blasting, the blast media itself must be cleaned up and disposed of properly, which can increase a project’s time and cost.

In dry ice blasting, high-density CO2 pellets are propelled through a high-velocity air stream. The pellets make most contaminants brittle, causing them to contract and break away from the surface. The propellant then whisks away the contaminant.
